Essential Resource No. 4

The value of historical mapping in genealogical research is substantial. Early 19th Century Maps of Ireland are extremely detailed, to the extent that not only do they show the location of churches, schools, workhouses, and hospitals, but in most cases, they will also show local employment industries operating in the area, including factories, ports, and barracks, as well as stately homes.
To visualise the environment that your Ancestors lived in, not only adds substance to your research, but can also provide you with a few new clues to help pursue your research even further.
Most Irish Family Researchers will inevitably come up against a Brick-Wall. Yet, 19th Century Maps of your Ancestors Townland may provide you with a new clue to kick-start your Research. For example, the knowledge that another church is located half a mile away from your Ancestors home, but is in a different county or parish boundary, could be crucial. Or, you may find that your Ancestor lived close to an Army Barracks or Stately Home, which could lead to new information being gleaned from Army or Employment Records.

Until now, important historical maps could only be found at specialist libraries, or Irish Repositories. However, a Company called Past Homes Limited has recently introduced a Unique Historical Mapping Service where you can purchase a highly-detailed, full-colour (or grey-scale, if you prefer) 19th Century Historical Map of your Ancestral Homestead, County, or other important location, in Ireland.
Past Homes Limited was formed by Adrian Strahan and Rob Cullingford to use their Specialist Mapping Knowledge to offer better and easier access to 19th Century Historical Maps.
The Maps that form the Past Homes Collection are First Edition 6-Inch Scale Ordinance Survey Maps of Ireland, surveyed between 1829 and 1843 - also known as the "Townland maps". They are regarded by those involved in Irish genealogy as one of the Most Important Map Collections ever published, not only because they are highly detailed, but also because they are the First Maps to accurately show the Boundaries and Names of all the Townlands, Parishes and Baronies throughout Ireland.
