MEMORIALS OF THE DEAD

We are delighted to make available transcripts from "The Association for the Preservation of Memorials of the Dead, in Ireland" to Full & Premium Members of IFR. The Association was formed in 1888, and its Members spent their free time transcribing Headstones in Old Churches and Graveyards that were fast disappearing in the late 19th Century - most of which no longer exist today. In many cases, Members of the Memorials Association cross-referenced their findings with historical and genealogical materials, thus providing us with a wealth of information about our Ancestors which would otherwise be lost today.

Our Findings

In transcribing these Memorials, the realization of how difficult our Ancestors' lives were in bygone years became all too apparent, and although the Potato Famine blighted many Irish families in the 19th Century, there were many other adversities that our Ancestors had to overcome:

  • Families were deliberately large in the 1600s-1800s, as many children did not live to see adulthood.

  • One of the highest causes of death in young women was childbirth;

  • Many of our Ancestors lost family members to Cholera, Typhoid, Tuberculosis, Smallpox and other diseases that were rampant during these times;

  • Many young men gave their lives for King and Country in the countless battles that were fought during the 19th Century, and earlier.

    Yet, despite these and many other adversities, our Ancestors were Survivors – and we are the living proof.

    What you will find in the Memorials Database

    The Transcripts included in this Database cover the period from the 1500s to the late 1800s. The present Database contains over 70,000 entries covering an extensive list of Graveyards across Ireland, details of which are listed below.

    The Database is searchable by Surname only, and will provide you with details of Full Name, Year of Death, Graveyard, County, and Page Number and Volume in which the entry appears in the Association’s Journal, as well as details of when the Headstone was originally Recorded.

    A Few Interesting Facts:

  • We were pleasantly surprised to see many so Memorials providing a complete Family Tree – Providing details of parents, maiden names, children’s names, etc.

  • In cases of unlawful killings, names and addresses of the murderers were provided on the Victim’s Headstone, together with details of their Punishment. Definitely not one for the faint-hearted !

  • Some interesting comments are often found in Parish Registers. For example, in the Registers of St. Marys, Blessington Parish, the following note was recorded about a man who had died in the Rebellion: “Killed by rebels, but not before he had killed two himself first”.

  • Most Headstones bear wonderful tributes to our Ancestors. The following 18th Century Example being most poignant: “In Grateful Remembrance of the Greatest of Fathers”, and we are reminded of the following Henry Longfellow poem entitled "A Psalm of Life" :

    Tell me not, in mournful numbers, "Life is but an empty dream!"
    For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.
    Life is real ! Life is ernest ! And the grave is not its goal;
    "Dust thou art, to dust returnest", Was not spoken of the soul.

    Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way;
    But to act, that each to-morrow Finds us farther from today.

    Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave
    Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.

    In the World's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life
    Be not like dumb, driven cattle ! Be a hero in the strife !

    Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant ! Let the dead Past bury its dead !
    Act, - act in the living Present ! Heart within, and God O'erhead !

    Lives of great men all remind us, We can make our lives sublime,
    And, departing, leave behind us, Footprints in the sands of Time;-

    Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing O'er Life's solemn main,
    A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again.

    Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate;
    Still achieving, Still Pursuing, Learn to Labour and to Wait.

    The Memorials Database is growing in size on a daily basis as further data is added.
